As the holidays come to a close and we wave farewell with heavy hearts (and stomachs), we are somewhat relieved to be forced away from the temptations of cookies for breakfast, lunch, and dinner and Mom’s leftover mac and cheese casserole as a mid-day snack. While we’ll rely on Muse data to tell us exactly which superfoods are on the up and up for 2018, it was no surprise that the general term itself sees a large spike in trending topics and overall popularity in January (and topics like cookies, pie, butter, and sugar begin to see a temporary decrease in engagement).
But, first thing’s first, what exactly is defined as a “superfood”? According to Merriam-Webster, a superfood is defined as “a food (such as salmon, broccoli, or blueberries) that is rich in compounds (such as antioxidants, fiber, or fatty acids) considered beneficial to a person's health.” AKA just the type of foods you’re likely craving after a month full of cookies, cake, and hot cocoa.
A new year is the perfect time for new intentions, goals, and habits. According to nielsen.com, staying fit/healthy and losing weight were the top two resolutions made in 2016. With the health and fitness community rising in popularity every day, it’s again no surprise that “superfoods” are already experiencing spikes in popularity on Muse. Superfood favorites like turmeric and matcha experienced their 15 minutes of fame in 2017. Given that many of their benefits are tried, true, and tethered to by many of our influencers, we expect these topics to continue to experience growth in 2018. Aside from last year’s top trending superfoods, we expect to see the following three topics really take off in the upcoming days, weeks, and months.
Turmeric lovers can rejoice because according to wellandgood.com, this newly discovered super green is on the rise to become an even more potent inflammation fighter than the beloved turmeric spice. Scientists have called moringa the “world’s most useful tree” and it’s finally made its way from India, Chile, and Africa to the Northern Hemisphere to be oohed and aahed at by health enthusiasts. You can expect to see this emerging trend in everything from nutrition bars to pressed juices and even beauty products.

2. Nut Oils
If you’re still coating your pans with a layer of vegetable oil, you may want to put “nut oils” on your grocery list. Many types of nut-butters exploded in popularity over the last year (think almond, cashew, walnut, etc.) in an effort to expand nutritional profiles and/or provide alternatives to certain nut allergies. According to healthline.com, oils will be following suit as the new essential in superfood cooking. Look to see an emergence of cold-pressed almond, cashew, walnut, and hazelnut oils as people seek out healthier alternatives to those like olive and vegetable oil.

3. "Functional" Mushrooms
Mushrooms are not just a great complement to spinach and goat cheese anymore, but instead are now being utilized in everything from dietary supplements to your morning cup of joe. Functional mushrooms come in a variety of types like reishi, chaga, and cordyceps—with slight emphasis on chaga to become the next “it” girl of functional mushrooms.
